Digging.
The following is an excerpt of today’s live presentation of “Seasonings with Sarah” held at Dunn Bros coffee in Eden Prairie.
‘Tis the season of resolutions.
I usually think of resolutions as unattainable or unrealistic, sort of a pipe dream. They sound glamorous at the time, and most often we proclaim “this is the year”! To give up chocolate, eat healthy, or keep in better touch with friends. To lose weight, start that regular workout, clean your office desk (mine) or get organized!
It’s not that all resolutions are unattainable, it’s just that most often they are based on the wrong foundation. Biblical scholar and preacher, Frank Harrington said, “Renewal is rooted in faith, not in resolutions! I cannot make a new me or you, but Christ can.”
Now that’s a new way to look at the whole business isn’t it?
So what do you want Christ to make new in you this year? I personally want to focus on the area of using my “talents” to the best of my ability.
Not long ago a friend asked me what I was doing in my ministry lately. I gave him the typical answer of the list of events I had upcoming. I have to say I was feeling quite smug since I had moved further along in some areas. But his reply was very pointed, “I think it’s time to get out the shovel.” What?
He was referring to the parable of the talents. And after further discussion, it was clear he was nudging me (maybe shoving me) to stop resting on my laurels and get moving – in the direction of digging, not burying.
Well it was true, I could be doing more with the gifts God has given me. I had been content to wait on opportunities to come my way – always coming up with reasons I couldn’t stretch myself further especially in the areas of marketing and promotion. After all, who likes to cold call? And it would also mean putting myself out there. Kinda like this little coffee shop thing Wednesday mornings… (“Seasonings with Sarah”)
In essence, it would require faith, not just resolutions.
How about you, is it time to get out the shovel? What talents are you “burying”?
Maybe its time to skip the resolutions this year, and instead, dig with faith. You never know what you might uncover.
Join us for the next Seasonings with Sarah on Wed., Jan. 27th at 9:30 a.m.
